The Old Country Store
The history of the country store in the United States can be dated back to colonial times. In many cases they were the logical next step in an evolutionary process where traveling hucksters and peddlers took up shop at permanent locations in settlements, small towns, camps and growing communities. In most instances the country store was the only place that supplied store-bought goods to a surrounding community.
Country storekeepers took up shop in all types of buildings but in most cases they carried the same types of goods. It was not uncommon for the country store to be a focal point where neighbors could congregate while conducting their shopping. As a result it seemed logical that in many cases country stores would also become the community’s first post offices.
We will be adding a Country Store at the Living Farm Heritage Museum in the future as part of the many examples of the types of structures and businesses that helped make up a rural community.
